FARADAY

HOTEL 2014

This project was my final project for the Diploma of Interior Design and Decoration. Working within the confines of Heritige listed buidling and providing designs for all of the public spaces within the hotel.

The Faraday, with the Type & Dasher bar, café and restaurant, is not only a boutique hotel but a hub for the Carlton community. Harking back to its haberdashery, saddlery and newspaper pasts this is a contemporisation of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Spaces are dominated by the bespoke blackbutt timber and birds-eye maple joinery. Using the artisan, time honoured techniques, give a unique and hand crafted texture; from the leather top reception counter to the dovetail joins on the timber cabinetry throughout.

Colours and textures differ throughout the spaces with rich warm colours in the bar, café and foyer, darker tones in the restaurant represent the ink in its newspaper past. Fabric panels are liberally used with the joinery adding a mix of pattern, both traditional and contemporary, creating a rich tapestry of materiality, delineating spaces and moods.

Furniture has been selected that is either hand crafted or design classics. This juxtaposition lets the hand crafted dominate, whilst giving comfort and longevity to the spaces. These are rich multifunctional spaces that will become the place to relax and enjoy.
