GRAND

DESIGNS LIVE 2014

This project was a student competition within RMIT to design a stand for the Grand Designs Live held in Melbourne 2014. I was a finalist within RMIT for this project to be constructed. The brief was to create a "5th room" a hybrid space that incorporates inside and outside together.

This 5th Room, is a space that is dynamic and flexible. An interpretation of the apartment of the future, with living, working, eating and cooking unified as a whole. Using easily obtainable materials, sustainable, both financially and environmentally.  The  design is an interpretation of the standard studwork construction that plays on the Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi and the western forms of deconstructivism.

Designed to be easily and affordably constructed; the materiality of sustainably sourced plantation timber, mdf, cement sheeting with clear and transparent walls give the space dynamic plays of light and texture. As the walls move and change, the fishing wire ceiling moves and flexes. Providing continuous interpretations of pattern and texture on the surface below.

The space plays with its triangular site, being both indoors and outdoors. Walls move and flex creating unique and dynamic spaces allowing furniture able to change to suit differing environments. The juxtaposition of old and new with antiques, vintage pieces and newer mass produced finds, give a dynamic flexible space for the future.
